Good times.

Strangely, they’d been simpler times in the beginning.

Adam had absolutely had my back then.

In fact, that day had been the first time that I’d seen it up close, seen just how much he'd actually gone to bat for me.

I’d thought for a long time that it had meant more than it really had. That we’d been close, that we’d been more than even friends.

But he’d never really trusted me.

It meant the whole brothers-in-arms thing had all been a lie.

He’d made me believe it. He’d made me want it.

But it was clear now that it had just been a method of control to him, to keep me in line.

At the end of the day, I’d only ever been an asset to him.

I should’ve known better and seen it way earlier on. After all, Adam didn’t feel normal human emotions like the rest of us. I’d foolishly fallen for the mirage and wanted to believe he’d managed to find a way with me, that he’d made an exception. But it had been my abilities more than anything else that had mattered to him.

“No one can match him.”

That was no longer the case.

Kara’s presence had shifted things.

I’d seen the change in her when she’d faced off with me at the farmhouse. She was stronger, more confident in her abilities.

It was Adam’s influence, no doubt about that. He was making her into a fucking soldier. Sure, she still had a way to go before she reached my level, but the fact that she was heading down the same path and already catching up at such a rapid rate, didn’t bode well. It made her a threat.

I’d never wanted it to come to that. We were supposed to be partners. Kindreds. Lovers.

If I couldn’t turn it back around and pull her back to me, all bets would be off. Because she was on track to becoming my greatest enemy. And all enemies had to be destroyed.

“Ricky!”

I jolted from my thoughts at the sound of Lee’s cry coming from the bedroom next door.

It was barely daybreak, but I’d been up for hours just staring at the ceiling, all this bullshit churning around in my head, refusing to give me a moment of peace.

I pushed off the bed and headed on out of the room to deal with her.

She hadn’t taken well to the injury Adam had inflicted. She’d been laid up in bed for the last few days, needing me to tend to her.

The fucking bastard had known well what he was doing. And it was working. It was putting our plans on hold. He was only delaying the inevitable, though.

And pissing me off would only make me all the more brutal when it was time to strike again.

Watch this space, Commander.
